ESOL
For the purposes of naturalisation "sufficient knowledge" of both the
language and life in the United Kingdom could be met either by
attaining or already being at ESOL Entry Three on a
first or
subsequent assessment and then taking a
citizenship test; or by making progress in the lower ESOL
language
levels which would contain an integral programme of studies about life
in the UK.
Learners' educational and employment backgrounds are often highly
diverse. Even within one teaching group, these backgrounds may range
from people with no previous education or employment at one end to
highly educated professionals such as doctors or university lecturers
at the other. Many learners already speak and write several languages
and can use this knowledge to support their learning.
Some ESOL learners have left their countries unwillingly. Some
are
suffering from culture shock and are experiencing practical
difficulties in specific areas of their lives, or racist attitudes and
behaviour. Learners are settling in the UK and will probably want to
learn about the country's systems, such as education, how to apply for
jobs and rules concerning immigration.
